Today’s job market is tough. Many job candidates are often well-educated and have years of experience. However, even experience and education do not guarantee a callback. In order to stand out from the crowd, use the following resume writing design tips.
Use a Resume Template
Some jobseekers begin with a blank word processing document and decide to go the do-it-yourself route. However, this can get confusing the more you type. Lines that may appear to line up perfectly may actually be off-center in your finished document. To avoid such a problem, use a resume template. There are dozens of them available for free online. A template will help you ensure that all of your spacing and alignments are in order. A template will also prompt you to include the relevant ingredients for a resume, such as the following:
- Contact information
- Work experience
Select a Readable Font
Some jobseekers make the mistake of standing out by using fancy script on their resume. You don’t want to send a hiring manager an unreadable document. As a general rule of thumb, the best fonts are plain and easy-to-read. Avoid using cursive fonts or big, blocky text. Instead, use Times New Roman or Calibri, which are commonly-used default fonts due to their readability and simplicity.
Use Bolded Text Sparingly
You do want to bold important sections of your resume, such as the headings marked for education, work experience and skills on your CV. However, you don’t want to go overboard with using bolded text. In fact, doing so could cause the resume to lose its punch. If more than half the words are bolded, the reader won’t understand which bolded words are most important. Stand out from other job seekers by using bolded text sparingly.
Experiment with Borders
One way to make your resume stand out is to include an attractive border. Pick a simple one that does not distract the reader from the words on the resume. For instance, a carefully-chosen thin border is less distracting than a large one with curlicues. A border can also be used to frame your name and contact info at the top of the page. This can effectively make your contact info easy to find.
Picture or No Picture?
Some job seekers have begun to personalize their resumes by including a personal snapshot. If you are considering doing this, proceed with caution. In most cases, an employer will not take you seriously when you affix a picture on your resume, especially if the snapshot looks unprofessional. However, when applying to certain creative jobs, such as web design, sending in a creative-looking resume can really get you noticed. As a general rule, if you aren’t seeking employment in a field that values creativity, do not include a photo with your resume. If you are going to use a picture, avoid using cartoon characters, as this can make your resume look like a school project.
Going on the job market can be an anxiety-filled experience. However, designing a resume that will get you noticed takes away some of that anxiety. Once you’ve designed your resume, have it reviewed by several other people and consider their feedback.
